EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
