France to begin intercepting migrant vessels in Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the President asking him to back the initiative and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have rarely acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, coming after a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Currently French officials will again be allowed to stop boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adjust to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
