Whenever a prominent honors show nears, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
