The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
